New Orleans and all that Jazz

14th June Tuesday

Determined to get our free breakfast, we set our alarms for 8am. Having eaten our food we went back to bed, 4 hours is definately not enough sleep! In fact we slept until 12pm. Having faffed about for a bit (writing the blog, going to the gym etc) we made the epic journey to the laundrette next door. Gillain and Sas had some stolen breakfast for lunch, Bessie and Alice got a po-boy (basically a subway).

Nothing exiting really happened in the afternoon.

In the evening we ate some more creole food at restaurant that enticed us in with their beautiful air conditioning. We also touched the Mississippi river.

We met up with the others outside a place called Preservation Hall. Fun fact: Preservation Hall was set up in the 1960s to showcase New Orleans’ jazz talents. The small hall hasn’t really changed much since then. The walls were quite run down but it looked authentic with pictures of musicians everywhere. There was also no Air Conditioning, which in case you haven’t gathered, is not so fun in the middle of Louisiana. The Jazz  was great fun though! There was a piano with no cover leaving the strings and hammers exposed, a stringed bass player, and awesome old guy who sang, played the saxophone and clarinet, a mental drummer, and a young trumpeter. They all loved the music they were playing. The informal setting, with cushions on the floor, and us all packed in to this tiny room listening to the most vibrant, energetic jazz music we’ve ever heard.
(that's Alice and Gillian with our totally awesome tour leader, Kat)
